- GENERAL STUFF
-
- Eudora is a mail program for the Macintosh. It uses the POP3 and SMTP
- protocols to receive and send mail from a network-connected Macintosh.
-
- System Requirements:
- Macintosh System 6.0.4 or later. (7.0 is fine.)
- MacTCP (or the Communications Toolbox & Communications Tools)
- POP3 and SMTP servers.
-
- A suitable POP3 server for UNIX systems ("popper") is available by
- anonymous ftp to ftp.cc.berkeley.edu, in the pub/popper subdirectory.
- I suggest the 1.831 version.
-
- If you have suggestions or comments regarding Eudora, please send them
- by electronic mail to the author of Eudora, Steve Dorner,
- s-dorner@uiuc.edu. Your suggestions are valuable, so don't be reticent.
- If you have questions about Eudora, do try the manual and Q&A stacks
- first; if they fail you, let me know. I *always* answer my mail; if
- you send me mail and don't hear from me, it's because I couldn't get
- mail back to you.
-
- Eudora is free for you to use.
-
- UNPACKING INSTRUCTIONS:
-
- Nine files are provided:
-
- 1. README - This file.
-
- 2. diskcopy.hqx - Use this program to unpack the disk images.
-
- 3. eudora1.2.2.i.sit.hqx - Disk image of the "Eudora Program" disk,
- containing Eudora 1.2.2 & MacTCP.
-
- 4. comm1.i.sit.hqx - Disk image of the "Communications 1" disk,
- containing the Communications Toolbox & tools, for use with Eudora and
- modems or other serial connections.
-
- 5. doc.i.sit.hqx - Disk image of the "Eudora Documentation" disk,
- containing the manual and Q&A stack.
-
- 6. 1.2Changes - A summary of the differences between version 1.1 and
- 1.2.
-
- 7. 1.2man.pm.sit.hqx - The manual in pagemaker format. Recommended
- only
- for those wishing to repackage the documentation for their site.
-
- 8. srialpop.c - A C program that makes it easier to use Eudora on
- dialins that are connected directly to UNIX systems. Only UNIX gurus
- will be able to do anything interesting with this file.
-
- 9. appendix-d - A replacement for Appendix D of the Eudora manual.
-
- Retrieve (using ASCII mode) the disk image(s) in which you are
- interested. Also retrieve diskcopy.hqx. Use BinHex or StuffIt to
- decode the .hqx files (if you use StuffIt, use the "Decode BinHex File"
- menu item). Then use StuffIt to unstuff the images.
-
- You will need at least 1 megabyte of memory to run the "DiskCopy"
- application. On Macintoshes with only 1 megabyte of memory, "DiskCopy"
- will not run under Multifinder; switch to single Finder.
-
- Double-click the "DiskCopy" application, and click to dismiss the
- copyright screen. Now, choose "Load Image" from the "File" menu, and
- select a disk image. Once it is loaded, click the "Start Copy" button,
- and insert an 800K floppy disk. The contents of the disk will be
- replaced with the disk image. YOU WILL NOT BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO CANCEL
- THIS OPERATION. Be sure you don't have anything valuable on the floppy
- disk.
-
- Once the copy is complete, click the "Stop Copy" button. You may now
- load
- another image, or quit the DiskCopy program.
-
- WARNING--The "MountImage" CDEV sometimes does not properly read the
- Eudora disk images. I recommend you avoid using "MountImage" on the
- Eudora disk images; use DiskCopy, as outlined above.
- UIUC STUFF
-
- Help, should you need it, on installing Eudora and MacTCP or the
- Communications Toolbox can be obtained by calling the Microconsulting
- Hotline (4-0608). There is a charge for on-site consulting.
-
- Free POP accounts are available to faculty and staff; contact the CSO
- Accounting Office, (333-6760). Free accounts are also available to
- students; go to the CSO site in the basement of the English building
- (enter by the outside stairs on the south side of the building).
-
- NOTE FOR System 6.0.7 USERS:
-
- If you want to install the Communications Toolbox, use the "Network
- Installer" diskette that came with your System 6.0.7 distribution. Ask
- it to install the Communications Toolbox.
-
- NOTES FOR System 7 USERS:
-
- Eudora works fine under System 7, except that you cannot switch
- applications when a dialog box is on the screen (you can under System
- 6). You can, however, switch when Eudora's "Progress" window is
- onscreen.
-
- MacTCP 1.1 is now included in Eudora; it is fully System 7 compatible,
- safe for use with VM; it should be put in the Control Panels folder.
-
- The Communications Toolbox is built in to System 7; you do not need to
- install it. You do need to drag the communications tools from the
- "Communications Folder" from the "Communications 1" diskette and into
- the "Extensions Folder".
-
- NOTE FOR LaserFix USERS:
-
- Eudora is not compatible with the "LaserFix" INIT. Attempts to contact
- the author of LaserFix have failed, so I do not know when the
- incompatibility will be fixed.
-
- NOTE FOR Virex 3.5 USERS:
-
- Under some conditions, Eudora's attachment feature is incompatible with
- Virex 3.5's HyperCard virus checking. If you are using this feature of
- Virex 3.5, and your Macintosh has a System Error when downloading
- attachments, disable Virex 3.5's HyperCard virus check, or update your
- copy of Virex to a newer
- version.
-
- NOTE FOR AppleTalk Remote Access USERS:
-
- If you have ARA's "Answer calls" option selected (from Remote Access
- Setup from Setup), and you have Eudora configured to use the
- Communications Toolbox on the same port that ARA uses, Eudora will be
- unable to connect. This is a conflict between the Communications
- Toolbox and ARA, and there's nothing I can do about it. Turn "Answer
- calls" off in ARA when you want to use Eudora.
-
- NOTE FOR Hayes Modem Tool USERS:
-
- Eudora 1.2.2 does not work with the Hayes Modem Tool. The beta version
- of Eudora (in the beta subdirectory) does.
-
- NOTE FOR Global Village Teleport USERS:
-
- Eudora 1.2.2 does not work with the Global Village Teleport ADB modem.
- The beta version of Eudora (in the beta subdirectory) does.
-
- NOTE FOR Quadra USERS:
-
- Eudora is incompatible with the screensaver "Moire", when run with the
- 68040 caches enabled in 32-bit mode. (Don't ask me why; I don't know.)
-
- NOTE FOR MultiNet 3.0 (VAX/VMS) USERS
-
- I have the following note from Philip M. Howard at Saint Mary's
- University:
-
- We just upgraded our VAX/VMS system to Multinet 3.0. I started to get
- repeat messages... Eudora no longer marked transferred messages as
- read. We
- found that a changed default in Multinet meant that users with "leave
- mail
- on server" checked should have a VMS logical defined to permit Eudora
- to
- work as it always had.
-
- We have included the following in our system login to restore
- Eudora's
- ability to mark mail as read:
-
- $ define multinet_pop3_auto_newmail true
-
- If included in users' personal login.com files it should be set for
- network
- logins (F$MODE() = NETWORK), but it is preferable to set it at the
- system
- login since commands in a personal login may override other system
- commands.
- UPDATE STUFF
-
- If you would like to receive announcements about updates to Eudora,
- send mail to "listserv@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu". The text of the message
- should consist of "sub eudora your-first-name your-last-name". Be sure
- you don't put anything else in the body of the message, including any
- sort of "signature".
-
- If you get tired of being on the list (though I promise to keep traffic
- low), send mail with the line "unsub eudora" to
- "listserv@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu".
-
- Copies of Eudora may be obtained by anonymous ftp to ftp.cso.uiuc.edu,
- in the mac/eudora subdirectory. Copies are also available from the CSO
- Resource Center, 1420 DCL MC 256, 1304 W. Springfield, Urbana, IL
- 61801, (217) 244-6261. If you bring your own disks (3 800K disks for
- the entire package), there is no charge. Printed copies of the manual
- are also available for $4. The disks and manual may also be ordered by
- mail; just send a check for $15.
-

- FUTURE PLANS
-
- I'm sorry to say that major development on Eudora is going to be
- shelved for a while. I will MOST CERTAINLY do bug fixes and may
- perhaps slip in new features as I have time. My management, however,
- feels it's time for me to do something new. They sign the checks,
- so...
